The Scapular of Mount Carmel

Dear Friends of Our Lady,

Each year on July 16th the Church honors the Blessed Mother under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

You may not know that the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel goes back into the Middle Ages. At that time, Our Lady gave us the gift of the scapular through St. Simon Stock. When she appeared under this title, as she did at both Lourdes and Fatima, her message was the same; strong encouragement to devotion of the scapular.

On July 1, 1961 the angel announced to the four visionaries at Garabandal that Our Lady would appear to them as Our Lady of Mount Carmel. She came on Sunday, July 2nd, dressed in blue and white as she had appeared to St. Simon Stock and wearing a large brown scapular on her wrist.

I want to bring to your attention two brief articles on our website which may deepen your appreciation for this title chosen by Our Lady in this time of crisis. We hope they will increase your devotion to the scapular.

In the first, Abbe Combe explains the significance of Mount Carmel reaching back into the Old Testament. In the second, Irene Dutra tells the story of the scapular and why it is important that we wear it.

We invite you to read these articles and reflect on them. If you do not have a scapular, please send me an email at Joey@garabandalny.org and we will send one to you gratis. Type SCAPULAR in the subject line and include your name, address, zip code and country.
