A Champion of Garabandal

Dear Friends,

Unobserved on a busy street corner in Paris, Robert Turner heard the voice of the Risen Christ. Those words that summoned Saint Matthew resounded in his soul, “COME FOLLOW ME.”

The son of an American doctor, raised in France between the wars, Robert never fully acquired the Episcopalian tradition of his family and was received into the Roman Catholic Church as a young man. A gifted student, a graduate of the elite French schools, he left two years into an advanced degree in physics at Harvard to return to Paris on the eve of the Second World War.

The shock of the sudden military defeat and collapse of the French government directed him to the service of the transcendent and infinite God. He joined the Dominican order in 1942 and was ordained a priest in 1945. A man of two cultures, he was a natural missionary and diplomat and the Order sent him to Iraq for the propagation of the faith in that ancient society.

The mid nineteen sixties found him back in France, in the Pyrenees, serving the migrants shuttling back and forth from Spain. He was very welcome in the company of the professors of the seminary in Tarragona where he came across the first reports of the startling apparition taking place high in the mountains.

He was about to embark upon another journey or as he later called it, “a spiritual adventure, one of the most beautiful of the century.”

As much as it piqued his curiosity, the physician’s son, the reflective observer, the careful examiner was not one to be swept away by allegations of mystical rapture. He required evidence. Removing himself physically from the apparitions, he began to compile thousands of pages of documents verified with great care, the transcripts of eyewitness testimony of those who had been to the village and could not deny what they had seen.

Father Turner’s personal investigations lead him to the great Father Materne Laffineur, author of Star on the Mountain, whose work uncovered the true importance of Garabandal for many. He allied with the Abbe Alfred Combe, father of the promotion in France. It is to these three men, Laffineur, Combe and Turner that the global Garabandal community owes many thanks. These priests of France faithfully collected the first impress and worked out the intellectual framework that sustained the cause through the very long night of doubt.

Father Francois Turner was the indispensable man of the Garabandal movement. A mentor to the international promotion, he moved easily between the American and European centers coordinating efforts, collaborating with other authors, and translating ideas everywhere he went. In a time of skepticism he wrote in favor of the apparitions and lectured insightfully on Garabandal around the world.

When his friend, Juan Antonio del Val Gallo of holy memory, was ordained Bishop of Santander, Father Turner worked in a spirit of fraternity to lift the lingering suspicion in the chancery and closed the breach which had opened with the global promotion. He was known to the Vatican and served as an informal liaison with Rome. Since his death in 1995, no one of such stature has risen to replace him.

Our Lady Teaches at Garabandal remains the only complete treatment of the apparitions by Father Turner in English, a compendium of anecdotes which he uses to illustrate the catechism of personal piety and virtue taught by the Most Blessed Virgin Mary during her five year visitation to the mountain village. He anchors these lessons soundly in sacred scripture emphasizing the continuity of the instruction of the Virgin and the acts of the visionaries with the counsel of the Old and New Testament.

Father Turner agreed with the American priest Joseph Pelletier A.A. who saw the apparitions as a preemptive inoculation against the crisis advancing in the wake of the Second Vatican Council. A speculative theology which came forward in those days directly challenged areas of settled Church teaching; the centrality of the Eucharist and the doctrine of the Real Presence, the efficacy of Marian Intercession and the assistance of the Holy Angels, the spirit of mortification and of sacrifices offered in reparation for sin, traditional devotional prayer – the Rosary – as a powerful aid to growth in the spiritual life. All of this is reaffirmed at Garabandal in a most astonishing way – not as dead concepts but as the living yet invisible reality.

The Fathers agreed that the crisis aimed at disrupting the priesthood, causing divisions among priests, casting doubt on the sublime dignity of their sacrificial vocation and ambiguity about their venerable place among Christians. Of vital concern to Father Turner was the sanctification of his brother priests. Our Lady at Garabandal requested the faithful fast and pray for priests, set apart by their distinction to be leaders of the Church. Our Lady told the visionaries that saintly priests save many souls as their actions are studied and imitated by many.

As we begin the Year of Faith, our Holy Father encourages us to return to the letter of the Second Vatican Council. Throughout his work, Father Turner quotes frequently from Presbyterorum ordinis, a document very much in harmony with the Message of Garabandal. It remains a valuable text for priests seeking to live saintly lives and reminds the faithful, from the heart of the Church, of their sacred obligation to support the spiritual work of priests by prayer.

During the course of the apparitions, when confronted by disbelief, the young visionaries turned to the Virgin for consolation. Our Lady assured them that the Great Miracle set to occur in their village at a future date would be the overwhelming proof of the supernatural origin of the events. This topic was of great interest to Father Turner and he derived a series of contingencies which he thought must precede the Miracle.

First, the knowledge of the Miracle must be broadcast around the world through the mass media. Having died before the advent of the Internet, Father Turner would have been pleased by the great strides made in the last decade using this open form of communication. In just the past four months, visitors from 126 countries have come to the website of the New York Center. We are excited to announce a new initiative through the content sharing website YouTube which will broadcast the 1996 documentary The Message of Garabandal on line in all twenty seven languages.

Next, the hearts and minds of peoples must be purified by the Warning which will prompt conversion and prayer. As miracles are the product of belief, a singular grace will be given to those who will see or know the Great Miracle so as to be properly disposed to more closely encounter Almighty God. The Holy Father will also experience the Miracle wherever he happens to be.

We remember our friend Father Francois Turner O.P. a holy priest, a man of great courtesy, a scholar in the best tradition of Dominican Scholasticism, and a champion of Our Lady of Mount Carmel de Garabandal.

Devotion to Saint Michael

“But at that time shall Michael rise up, the great prince, who standeth for the children of thy people: and a time shall come such as never was from the time that nations began even until that time.”

-The Book of Daniel; Chpt. 12 vs.1

“The fact that the angel of Garabandal was the archangel Saint Michael has a special meaning. It indicated the basic theme of what was happening in this little village. St. Michael’s very presence proclaimed the great spiritual drama that was unfolding on earth and of which Garabandal was to be one of the very important acts. It heralded a gigantic struggle in the world between the forces of good and the forces of evil. Those who have taken to heart the Garabandal Message understand this and pray frequently to him whom the Church has always invoked as a powerful ally in the struggle with the devil.”

-Fr. Joseph Pelletier A.A.; God Speaks at Garabandal

“I, your mother, through the intercession of Saint Michael the Archangel, ask you to amend your lives.”

-The Second Message of Garabandal; June 18, 1965

The Roman Catholic Church from its earliest generations has maintained a strong devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel. This devotion is rooted solidly in sacred scripture by the explicit use of his name in the prophetic books, the many works attributed to him by the inherited Hebrew tradition and complimentary exegesis by the Fathers of the Church.

In the West, popular devotion to Saint Michael spread through the apparition of the Holy Angel across Europe in the darkest hours of late antiquity. At such places as Monte San Angelo and Mont San Michel, among many others, great shrines grew to become the destinations of devotional pilgrimages. They have lasted down the centuries to our own time as a testament to the Christian patrimony of Europe.

Modern devotion to Saint Michael really begins with the apparitions of a Portuguese Carmelite, the Servant of God, Antonia d’Astonac who received a series of prayers by divine inspiration which she attributed to Saint Michael. These prayers salute Saint Michael as well the nine choirs of angels. To those who faithfully recite this chaplet Saint Michael promised his constant spiritual assistance, that of all the angels, defeat of any demonic influence throughout the family, the gradual acquisition of a pure heart and when said before holy mass; an angelic escort at the time of communion. This chaplet was approved and a monthly plenary indulgence under the ordinary conditions was added to it in 1851 by His Holiness, Pius IX.

Some thirty years after this recognition, devotion to the Archangel Michael was to spread rapidly through the entire Church with the express consent of the Holy Father. In 1884, Pope Leo XIII received a mysterious revelation while attending mass which caused him great alarm. Although he did not commit the spiritual intuition to writing, his contemporaries began to circulate that the Holy Father had been granted knowledge of a gathering satanic assault of terrible force and a century’s duration directed at destroying the Catholic Church. Leo XIII, deeply concerned by the prophesy, commended the defense of the Church to Saint Michael by promulgating the following prayer:

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle;
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray:
and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
by the power of God,
cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits
who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Looking back at the bloody twentieth century we can surmise the ferocity of this attack which put to persecution and martyrdom millions of Catholics throughout the world at the hands of totalitarian and communist regimes – but the Church endures.

As many remember, this Leonine prayer was said at the conclusion of each mass until the introduction of the Novus Ordo in 1970. Ironically, in 1984, the centennial of Leo XIII’s vision, Pope John Paul II revived by papal indult the optional use of this prayer at the conclusion of Mass. In a later address, that Great Holy Father spoke clearly, “Although this prayer is no longer recited at the end of mass, I ask everyone not to forget it and recite it to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and against the evil spirits of this world.”

This brings our narrative to the times of the apparitions at Garabandal. Here, Saint Michael is first upon the scene. His appearances commencing June 18, 1961, preceded and prepared the way for those of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. The visionaries, aged 11 and 12 at the time, described him as distinguished, smiling and hearty; in age about nine years old.

Incidentally, it is not unexpected of Saint Michael to cast his appearance and age as similar to that of the young visionaries so as not to overwhelm them. This has been a recorded phenomenon in many other angelic visitations including those of Saint Catherine Laboure.

Throughout the period of the apparitions, Saint Michael brought Holy Communion to the visionaries on days when mass was unavailable in the village. It is worth recalling his instructions on reception of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Before receiving communion he requested of the children to say an Act of Contrition and before thanksgiving after reception he taught them to say the Anima Christi (“Soul of Christ”) of Saint Ignatius Loyola. When asked where the hosts they received had come from, Saint Michael responded that they were taken from tabernacles on earth because, “angels cannot consecrate.”

Saint Michael was instrumental throughout the apparitions appearing often at the side of the Blessed Mother and in the company of another angel who remained anonymous. He was the minister of the visible host in the “little miracle” and was the bearer of the Second Message of Garabandal on June 18, 1965 which he committed to Conchita in person. We do not have the opportunity here to recount in detail all the minor works of Saint Michael during the apparitions. We can only direct those interested to the original works on Garabandal contained on our website– www.garabandal.us -and available gratis.

In these days surrounding the feast of the Holy Archangels and the Guardian Angels we commend this devotion to you with great enthusiasm. These are indeed times of crisis with so much swirling violence and random catastrophe we do well to heed Our Lady’s request to increase our devotion to the Prince of the Holy Angels and secure for ourselves and our families their faithful assistance and protection and deliverance from the evil of this hour.

May Saint Michael the Archangel, Guardian of the People of God, patron and protector of the Church of Jesus Christ and victorious by the power of God over all His enemies uphold and defend the faithful in this present generation.

Five Years Online

Dear Friends of Our Lady,

This month marks five years of continually sending Our Lady’s Message of Garabandal around the world via our website. Since my accident happened in 1947, I have never seen a television. I could not imagine how computers using telephone lines and satellites to carry the internet could play such a vital role in the global promotion of the Message around the world. No one could estimate how valuable our website would become for the free distribution of Garabandal information; the books, leaflets and videos made available in the many languages of the world.

Five years ago this month, Pope John Paul II, encouraging use of the internet wrote, “We should not be afraid to put to sea in the vast ocean of information. If we do, the good news can reach the hearts of the men and women of the new millennium.”

We do have good news to share with you.

-The promotion of the Message of Garabandal has truly extended throughout the world. In the past five months alone, we have received emails requesting materials and information from people in over 40 countries and all 50 states. From Afghanistan to Zambia, the workers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, over forty years after the conclusion of the apparitions, continue to work for the spread of the Message as Our Lady requested.

-The Message of Garabandal has entered the Middle East. In the past year, we have been in contact with and supplied material to promoters in the small and encircled Christian communities in Turkey, Lebanon, Kuwait, The United Arab Emirates, Pakistan and most recently Iran.

-The new Spanish/English DVDs have gone into all the countries of South and Central America and the major cities of Mexico.

-On the website, the most popular features continue to be the downloaded audio files of the Message of Garabandal in the major languages of Asia; Chinese, Japanese and Korean, Tamil and Hindi from the Indian subcontinent, Vietnamese and Tagalog, the native language of the Philippines. This summer we will again be sending gratis material to the Garabandal promoters across Africa.

-In April, Conchita sent Joey Lomangino a copy of a letter dated February 12, 2007 from Archbishop Carlos Sierra of Oviedo, the acting Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese of Santander in Spain to a prominent Garabandal supporter in that country. We are encouraged by the tone of the Archbishop’s letter which seems to indicate a warm familiarity with the apparitions and points to a new openness of the Hierarchy of the Church to the events at Garabandal. He also reasserts authorization for priests to go to Garabandal on pilgrimage and say Mass and hear confessions. With Conchita’s permission we reprint an excerpt;

“I want you to know that I am open to receiving and considering all information about Garabandal , and would like to continue-as long as our Holy Father wishes me to serve as Apostolic Administrator-the work that my brothers at the Bishopric have already done in reference to this subject. What I have just done is authorize the priests to go to Garabandal and hold Holy Mass at the Parish, at any desired time, and to administer the Sacrament of Reconciliation to anyone that wishes to receive it.

I am sure the next Bishop will promote further studies to examine in depth the Garabandal events and will send the findings to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome.

I respect apparitions and have known of authentic conversions. How can we not always feel the need to open our heart to our Mother Mary to tell her that we need her protection, her help, her courage, her hope, her faith and her love when faced with these events! I encourage you to keep maintaining such devotion toward our Mother.”

-Carlos, Archbishop of Oviedo

-We continue to receive requests for information regarding the prophecy of the Three Popes. We encourage all visitors to the site to read Fr. Francois Turner’s treatment of this prophecy by following the link below.

Fr. Turner on the Prophecy of the Three Popes and the End of this Epoch

-Recently, we have received a flood of new subscribers to our email list. We encourage our new email subscribers to spend time visiting our website.

-Please be aware of the three video presentations that may be viewed gratis:
The Message of Garabandal (in 26 languages)
Garabandal: After the Visions
Joey Lomangino on Mother Angelica Live

We especially recommend viewing Conchita’s interview in After the Visions, located on the Prophecies page, for its excellent description of the Warning, Miracle and Chastisement.

-There are also many insightful articles, interviews, and testimonies of the primary witnesses to the Garabandal Events taken from GARABANDAL Magazine (1972-2002). The New York Center no longer publishes a quarterly magazine and is not affiliated in any way with any current Garabandal publication.

– The intentions of all the Workers of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, their associates and benefactors are remembered in masses offered on the 18th of each month around the world. Please continue to pray for us.

Joey Lomangino

Year of the Eucharist 2004-2005

We celebrate with the Church worldwide our Holy Father John Paul II’s proclamation of the Year of the Eucharist – October 2004 to October 2005-announced October 10th in Mexico.

One of the great themes of the Message of Garabandal is the importance of the Eucharist, “VISIT THE BLESSED SACRAMENT FREQUENTLY”.

The Blessed Mother said, “My Son waits for you in the tabernacle night and day.”

St. Michael instructed the visionary Conchita before receiving Holy Communion to “think of who you are about to receive” and to say an act of contrition. He told her to recite the prayer Soul of Christ (the Anima Christi) following reception of Holy Communion.

Try to make visits to the Blessed Sacrament part of your prayer-life whether you make a short personal visit or participate in Perpetual or Nocturnal Adoration at your local church. Consider a Year of the Eucharist pilgrimage for your family or group to the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC  or the Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery, home of Mother Angelica and the Poor Clare Nuns in Hanceville, Alabama or a shrine in your locality.

Remember, Jesus is waiting for you, He will listen to you and He will give you His peace .

MAKING THE MESSAGE KNOWN

In 2004, the New York Center began to develop and distribute Garabandal Message Theme Postcards, following a discussion with the visionary Conchita during which she asked that the Workers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel de Garabandal concentrate especially on the Message of Garabandal. The purpose of these 6×9 theme cards is to encourage thoughtful reflection on the Message and its application to each individual life. The themes used were: Think of the Passion of Jesus, But First You Must Lead Good Lives and Visit the Blessed Sacrament Frequently. To date almost 400,000 cards have been mailed across America putting the Message of Garabandal into the hands of Catholics in every state. Many are now visiting our website and learning more about the apparitions.

GARABANDAL.US
The website continues the work of the New York Center providing books and videos to view or print off gratis. There are no plans to reprint our rapidly dwindling inventory of hardcopy books. The Message of Garabandal video is viewed daily in English and Spanish, recently the video has been viewed in Russian, Tamil, Korean, French, Japanese and Polish. There is no better explanation of the coming Warning and Miracle than that given by Conchita in the 32 minute interview, Garabandal-After the Visions (prophecies). The most popular downloaded book continues to be Our Lady Comes to Garabandal by Fr. Joseph A. Pelletier A.A. (www.garabandal.us/pdfs/dw_our_lady_comes.pdf). Visits to the Spanish site are increasing with many visitors coming from Mexico. This website, professionally serviced and secured is our most valuable asset to bring the Message and Events of Garabandal free around the world.

EMAILS AND OUR EMAIL LIST
Incoming emails to joey@garabandalny.org are read on a regular basis with all prayer intentions noted. Replies are simply impossible. Registration on our email list grows daily and numbers in the tens of thousands. Our webmaster recently made registering simpler to accommodate various types of computers. We will not abuse the privilege of your confidence. This technology is used solely for the spread of the Message of Garabandal and the appropriate information on the coming Warning and Miracle.

THE WORLDWIDE WORK OF THE CENTER
While we are excited about the growing spread of the Garabandal Message across America, we remain faithful to our commitment to send leaflets and holy cards, anywhere, gratis to spread Our Lady’s Message. Once active Centers around the world have grown silent with the passing or aging of their leadership but because of their past efforts new promoters have stepped forward to continue to distribute this gratis material. In 2004, leaflets and holy cards were sent to New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Japan, Australia, Ireland, Scotland, and Canada.

During the summer, materials in Spanish went to Argentina, Chile, Columbia and Peru in South America and also Mexico where the Eucharistic Congress in Guadalajara is now underway. We also continue to receive requests for materials from Spain. Spanish language books are now out of stock, but remain available to be printed off the website in Spanish.

We received a request for prayers from a parish priest in Kuwait, whose location we will not publish, who requests prayers for his people and all those suffering in that troubled part of the world. We had previously heard from a priest in Pakistan who requested prayers for the same intention. Garabandal leaflets and holy cards in French went to Garabandal promoters along the Ivory Coast of Africa. Please pray for the safety of our couriers into China and remember our promoters in Uganda who ask for prayers for their country and for those suffering in the bordering country of the Sudan.

All the good work mentioned is made possible by the widow’s mite donations of many generous Americans and the time of a few remaining volunteer Workers at the New York Center. We are grateful to God, to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, to the Workers throughout the world, and to you our Union of Prayer members who help us to continue to live and spread the Message of Garabandal +++

New York Center Update

October 18th is an appropriate day to report on the spread of the Message of Garabandal. The purpose of the Workers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel de Garabandal has always been and will continue to be to spread the MESSAGE OF GARABANDAL as requested by Our Lady over 40 years ago. Joey Lomangino began this work using simple leaflets, then slides, film, videos and now a website. Answering correspondence years ago prompted a simple newsletter called “Needles” and then the Garabandal Magazine which was discontinued in January, 2002. Now through the internet, authentic and factual information gathered over time from Garabandal priest-experts and witnesses is immediately available world wide.

During his weekly address at St. Peter’s Square on May 12, 2002, Pope John Paul II said, “I have decided to propose a big new theme for this year: The Internet—a new forum for proclaiming the Gospel.” Going further, he said, “Recent progress in communications and information, have presented the church with unheard of possibilities for evangelism. We shouldn’t be afraid to put to sea in the vast ocean of information.” He went on, “If we do so the good news can reach the hearts of men and women of the new millennium. We have to become part of this modern and ever more finely woven web of communications with realism and confidence, convinced that, if it is used competently and with due responsibility, it can offer an opportunity for the dissemination of the word of the Lord.” Reuters (nypost.com 05/13/02)

It is a reality that this website is taking the Message into new places. The popularity of the website grows every day with a constant increase of hits and visitors since the website launched in May 2002. Prayer intentions arrive daily and the volume of email continues to grow.

WHAT’S NEW?
The most frequently asked question is “What’s New?” There is nothing new to report about the events of Garabandal 1961-1965. No statement is expected from Church authorities until the conclusion of the prophecisied events: the Warning, the Miracle and the Sign to be left at the pines. The only visionary who knows the date of the Miracle is Conchita who will reveal it eight days in advance. She will not give public interviews until after the Miracle. Joey Lomangino does not know the date of the Miracle. Do not be anxious, no one is going to miss the Warning which will come before the Miracle. For those who want to be informed, the New York Center offers the original Garabandal books on-line free for your personal use. These books form the basis for most of the information available today. You can also obtain paperback copies through the Garabandal Materials Catalogue while inventory is still available. The Special Edition Magazine, Warning and Miracle, is now out of stock, however, this information is available on the website. The Special Edition Garabandal Magazines: Joey’s Story and Padre Pio are now only available on the website.

WHAT ABOUT PROMOTING THE MESSAGE?
The New York Center was excited to begin shipping material into mainland China. The Message of Garabandal videos and Holy Cards in Mandarin and Cantonese were sent to separate locations in the north and south of the country. A new contact in Asia has supplied us with labels written in Chinese. While we have maintained ties with centers in Hong Kong and Singapore this is the first contact with Catholics inside mainland China. We received confirmation of arrival of videos and holy cards in July, 2003. More videos are now on the way to China.

Also, a large supply of Garabandal Materials and religious articles were shipped to a priest-promoter in Skiekhupura, Pakistan, an area of the Middle East where Catholics face religious persecution every day. Again, written confirmation of the safe arrival of Garabandal leaflets, rosaries and holy cards was recently received.

WHO CARES ABOUT AFRICA?
Once again, as part of our summer promotion work and continued commitment to our faithful African promoters, we shipped books, pictures, holy cards, Message cards, inventory and religious articles into AFRICA where any religious item is greatly appreciated. Last summer we sent a huge amount of materials into Africa using the donations received from you, our friends, to pay the ever increasing U.S postage fees. This summer Garabandal materials went to Ghana, Republic of Cameroon, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, Benin, Burundi, Togo and Ethiopia. In his recent letter advising receipt of these materials, Most Rev. Sebastian Khuari, O.M.I.,Bishop of the Diocese of Mohale’s Hoek in Lesotho, Nigeria echoed the deep gratitude of all those who receive these packages. African Priest-promoters join in the prayers and Masses said on the 18th of each month for the Workers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

WHAT ABOUT THE WORLDWIDE APOSTOLATE?
Since last writing, the New York Center has supplied GRATIS materials to promoters, old and new, in the following countries: Albania, France, New Zealand, Japan, Panama, Canada, Czech Republic, Trinidad, West Indies, Germany, England, Australia, Poland, Philippines, Italy, Ireland, Sri Lanka, Russia, Malta and shipped Spanish language Garabandal materials into Spain and the countries of South, Central and Latin America as well as Panama, Puerto Rico and special packages that reached Cuba.

WHERE ELSE DID THE GARABANDAL MESSAGE GO THIS YEAR?
What began with one woman’s request for Garabandal books to send to a correctional institution resulted in over 300 lbs. of Garabandal materials, religious and educational books sent to 20 federal and state prisons and local correctional facilities and penitentiaries across the United States in the Summer of 2003. The New York Center was pleased to participate in this charitable work.
